About Me
I have over 20 years of creative experience. I’ve specialized in painting cabinets for seven of those years. I am most passionate about nurturing creativity in others.
Hello! I’m Susan.
Shades of Chic was officially born at my kitchen table in 2011. But truth be told, it was born in my heart a long time before that. When I was a little girl, my mother cleared out a hall closet in our tiny suburban apartment and created for me my very own art studio. Filled with all things art: crayons, glue, yarn, scissors, and my favorite…a Holly Hobby light box. Oh, how I loved that closet! During that same time, my dad was a construction worker and I enjoyed tagging along to his various jobs and learning all things construction. I especially loved watching him paint. He taught me the importance of a good brush and how to cut in properly. And so, my love of painting was born.
Eventually, I moved on from light boxes and on to computers, where I designed logos and brochures. I was a freelance designer for 15 years but got tired of staring at a flat screen and yearned to work on something of a much larger scale. The minute I saw a picture of a beautifully painted dresser, I knew I had to try my own hand at it. And then it happened…like spontaneous combustion. My love of art and paint had finally come together and I was hooked! It started out as a hobby but quickly grew into a full-time business.
After several years of selling my painted pieces at outdoor markets, I branched off and began specializin in kitchen cabinets. I worked tirelessly learning the process and honing my skills. I have well over 100 kitchens under my belt now and can officially say I have my process down to a science.
Earlier in 2022 I moved into my first offical workshop in Middletown, Ohio. My workshop is also home to my newest venture The VIBE. A creative studio where we hold DIY workshops and events. The VIBE is a dream come true for me because I am most passtionate about fostering creativity in others.
“Very happy with our kitchen “spruce up”! Susan and her assistant were wonderful to work with too! Would highly recommend.”
